2nd Week of Hong Kong: December 1-7

Greetings from Hong Kong!

We've been settling into Hong Kong life well, and the group has enjoyed the freedom that Hong Kong offers. We are living in the hotel right next to campus, the MTR (metro) is just a five minute walk away. We love having the MTR so close, it's an easy way to get out and explore the city!

On Friday we had a lecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in the morning, and then a lunch break before having our Global class. We each have our own topic that we study in each country, and during this class we shared what we would be researching in Hong Kong. Everyone has a wide variety of topics, and its been interesting to learn from everyone. After class we were free for the weekend, and a group of us went out for Mexican food in the city. We take Mexican food for granted in the States, and it was delicious to have a small taste of home!

Weekends are free in Hong Kong, so get to explore on our own or with groups. I decided to go hiking, since Hong Kong is known for some of its hiking trails that have beautiful panoramic views of the city. I did one with views of nature and the city, it was beautiful and well worth the climb up the mountain to get there! On Sunday I did another hike called Dragon's Back, which is the most famous hike in Hong Kong. Because it was Sunday, the trail was packed, but it had beautiful views and wasn't too difficult. I met a lady from the Philippines and we hiked together-- it's always fun to meet new people while traveling!

After a fun weekend out hiking, Monday was back to class. We had class in the morning, and then visited a Daoist temple in the afternoon. The temple was beautiful, and was a contrast to the huge skyscrapers that dominate Hong Kong. (Fun fact, Hong Kong has the most skyscrapers of any city in the world!) On Tuesday we also had morning class, and then in the afternoon we had a tea tasting session. We got to taste and learn about all the different kinds of tea, and learn about tea in Chinese culture. It was very interesting-- I personally had no idea how many different kinds of tea there were! On Wednesday we also had class in the morning, and then we all studied in the afternoon for our quiz the next day. Our class in China is Chinese Art History, so as a math major, I'm slightly out of my element. But, it's been fun to learn art in China from such knowledgeable professor. After studying in the afternoon, it was Siri's birthday, so we went out for birthday dinner to celebrate. The hotel also gives us a cake for birthdays, so we celebrated again back in the room. After it was back to bed for our quiz the next morning.

Hong Kong has been an awesome city-- our art classes have been so interesting, we have more free time to explore, and there's so much to do and see. Overall, the group has been loving Hong Kong!
